We hate to be the bearers of bad news but, unfortunately for us all, there is no way of stopping time, which means there is still no chance of you completely preventing your skin from ageing. The unstoppable forces that are the ticking clock and the pull of gravity are almost on a hellbent mission to add lines to your face before making your skin sag. That’s an unabashed reality that even the Hollywood elite and Instafamous can’t escape.

But for all this doom and gloom, there is some good news to cherish and it goes like this: there are loads you can be doing to keep your gorgeous facade looking younger for longer. Mmm hmmm. It isn’t all about being blessed genetically. There are habits that you can get into that will slow down the effects of ageing. Oh, and this isn’t just us saying it to please you; this is science talking:

Stop Sunning Yourself So Often

Ever since Baz Luhrmann brought this bit of information to the forefront of our frontal lobes through the medium of song, this piece of information has been filed under ‘obvious’. But that doesn’t make it any less vital if you are serious about looking healthy well into your later years. To put it to you in simple scientific terms, the sun’s UV rays penetrate your skin so deep they harm your collagen, which means your skin can no longer regenerate like Wolverine and you start looking like an old football boot. Of course, your alternative to staying indoors is to wear sunscreen with SPF30+ (and lots of stars on the back – which is the UVA rating).

Youthful Looks Gone Up In Smoke

Smoking is one of the most effective wrinkle-makers out there, which is just one of the reasons why you need to quit. What smoking does is starve your skin of oxygen, meaning it can’t get those yummy nutrients it needs so badly. But that isn’t all. Smoking also attacks your collagen and elastin. Now, if you’ve been a smoker for a long time, you can go to clderm.com for more information on collagen stimulators and how they can help with youthfulness. But they will only work effectively if you stop killing yourself with cigarettes. Just the pursing of your lips to inhale causes wrinkles around your mouth.

Don’t Eat If It’s Sweet

That’s a pretty good rule to live by because, according to science, there are absolutely no positive benefits to consuming sugar. None. Sure, popping along to a cafe on a sunny Sunday morning to get an ice cream sundae every so often isn’t going to hurt. But do it so often the staff just ask if you want you regular and you are going to look old. To counter this, you need to eat plenty of fruit and veggies and whole foods in general. You know, foods like salmon and walnuts and avocados and broccoli and all that stuff. They’re great for healthy looking skin. If, however, you want to go a few steps further and get the kind of glow only a suntan has achieved before now, it’s time you started eating carotenoids on the regular, by which we mean kale and carrots radishes and those types of delicious and nutritious edibles.
