The United States is such a vast country that it can be nigh-on impossible to decide where you want to go. You can visit big-name states, lesser-known states, cities in the middle of nowhere and cities that are bustling metropolises– whatever you want, the USA has got it.

However, sometimes, something as simple as a name can be enough to intrigue you enough to want to visit. One of the quirks of four US states is that they are divided into “North” and “South”. Visiting these north/south states purely because of a naming oddity might seem like a strange idea, but these states have so much to offer, they absolutely justify it…

North Dakota has a reputation as a rugged state, but there’s plenty of luxury to be found here too. Whether it’s enjoying a stay at the Candlewood Suites Fargo @ NDSU or delighting in the Plains Art Museum, there’s plenty of high-life to be expecting in ND.

However, there’s no doubt that North Dakota does have a rugged beauty, and it’s one you’re going to want to explore. Head to the Cowboy Hall of Fame for a fun day out, or head into Theodore Roosevelt National Park (pictured above) to delight in the truly stunning scenery.

South Dakota

It is impossible to talk of visiting South Dakota without mentioning its most famous landmark: Mount Rushmore (pictured above). Thousands of people per year flock to South Dakota to gaze upon this incredible work of art carved into stone, and you’ll want to do the same.

Outside of Mount Rushmore, South Dakota is a lush, open space that is perfect for rural walks, hiking, and cycling. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of life for awhile, SD might be the state for you.

The highlight of the state is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park which are so beautiful you’ll want to grab a pair of hiking boots and explore all you can.

If you’d prefer something a little more cosmopolitan, head to the beautiful capital city of Charlotte (pictured above). The historic buildings are a delight to enjoy on a walking tour, then you can spend the evenings sampling the incredible restaurants that the city has to offer.

If you’d rather head out into nature, South Carolina can deliver there, too: the Congaree National Park (pictured above) offers an incredible opportunity to explore a stunning landscape filled with historical points of interest.

Finally, you’re going to want to spend a night or two in the thriving, bustling capital of Charleston, delighting in the cuisine on offer and the ever-vibrant nightlife.

The north/south states might not be your first consideration when you’re looking for your next travel destination, but there’s no denying the true wonders they have to offer.
