Going to hospital is nobody’s idea of a good time but unfortunately, it’s probably going to happen at some point. As you get older, you’re far more likely to get ill and need to go to hospital. You could also end up needing treatment if you injure yourself as well. You can never avoid going to the hospital entirely but if you know what the risks are, you can try to avoid it as much as possible. The easiest way to reduce your chances of having to see a doctor  is to know what the most common reasons people go there in the first place are so you can take steps to protect yourself from those ailments. These are the most common reasons for a hospital stay and how you can avoid them.

Irregular Heartbeat

Heart problems are always going to be at the top of this list, especially in older people. Heart attacks are obviously a big problem but you’d be surprised how many people are taken into hospital with an irregular heartbeat. If your heart is beating out of step, you’re at risk of problems with low blood pressure, strokes and sudden heart attacks. Every single year, around 540,000 people are taken into hospital because they’ve got an irregular heartbeat.

Heart Failure

If that irregular heartbeat isn’t seen to, or you’ve got another issue going on somewhere, you’re at risk of a complete heart failure. Up to 750,000 people every year are hospitalized by a heart failure which can easily be fatal. That’s a scary number but in some sense, it’s encouraging that it’s so high. One of the reasons that it’s so high is that we’re getting better at treating other heart conditions so people are living longer with them, leading to more people ending up having a full heart failure.

Medical Errors

If you’re already in hospital you’re probably hoping that you won’t be back anytime soon, but the reality is that you could be. The number of medical errors that happen every year is staggering. You might be thinking, who investigates medical malpractice? If it happens to you, you can get a lawyer to fight your case for you and claim some money from the hospital. People often think of doctors as infallible but the truth is that they make mistakes just like everybody else. Regardless of how experienced they are, they could still get things wrong and it can easily lead to further injury which means you have to go back into hospital. It’s also far more common than people realize; medical errors are now the third highest cause of death in the US. We’ve only recently started to realize just how big a problem this is so the problem is likely to start getting better but at the moment it’s one of the most likely reasons you’ll end up in hospital, again.

Medication Mix-Ups

As well as mistakes in the operating rooms, doctors can easily make a mistakes with your medication. If there’s a mix up with your medication and you end up taking something for a condition that you don’t have, you can make yourself very sick. You also won’t realize that you’re taking the wrong medication unless there’s a strong immediate reaction so you might end up taking the wrong stuff for a while and doing yourself some serious damage. You’re also at risk from medication if you aren’t using it right. Sleep pills are one of the most common drugs that cause people problems because they take more than the recommended dosage. Every single year, nearly 2 million people end up in hospital because of some kind of mix up with their medication.

Pneumonia

The risk of infection is reduced when you’re younger because your immune system is likely to be stronger but it’s still something that you should consider. Pneumonia is the most common infection that people get and you have a higher risk of it if you’ve already got another illness or injury so it’s often the reason for extended stays in hospital. Older people are more prone to getting both the viral and the bacterial form of pneumonia and that risk is increased tenfold if you’ve got a preexisting condition. If you’ve had a stroke, got diabetes or even the flu, your risk of contracting pneumonia is massively increased. Every single year, almost 900,000 people are admitted to hospital because they’ve got pneumonia.

These are the most common reasons that you could end up in hospital.
