At Home Teeth Whitening: Does it Work?

At Home Teeth Whitening: Does it Work?

I love working in an office setting, especially since I love working with others and helping others out. I work with college students and where I work, I sit in the front desk, so I’m basically the face of the college. I’m the person that students see whenever they need help or if they have questions.

Because I’m “the face of the college,” I always have to make sure that I’m professional and that I’m always smiling. It’s important that I greet my students and potential students with a smile on my face.

The problem with this is that I unfortunately drink way too much coffee for my own good that the coffee stains my teeth. This makes me insecure to smile in front of my students because I get nervous that my yellow teeth will show and “turn off” my students. Physical appearance and professionalism matter a lot in my workplace so it’s important that I always look and act professional.

Thankfully, Smile Brilliant contacted me a few weeks ago about trying their products. I was eager to try their products because I’ve heard a lot of reviews about their products and plus, let’s be honest, my teeth can use all the work they can get. It’s pretty much a kit where you can whiten your teeth at the comfort of your own home. How cool is that?

Let me break down what it’s like to use Smile Brilliant products because surprise, I’m doing a giveaway, so stay tuned until the end to see how to enter!

Smile Brilliant first sends you a box of their products which contain the 3 whitening gel, 3 desensitizing gel, and a step by step process to create molds for your teeth. You have to create molds for your teeth before you can start whitening your teeth. So, they give you instructions on how to create molds. I’ll admit, it was a little weird at first because I’ve never tried this in my life before. You have to mold the clay onto a tray that you then put on your teeth, deep and hard enough to make a print of your teeth. You do this for the bottom and your top teeth, but one at a time. After you make the molds for your teeth, you mail it back to Smile Brilliant (free of charge) and at this point, you just wait.

They’ll email you once they received the molds and then they’ll email you once they ship the custom-fitted trays back to you. In general, it took about a week and a half to receive.

This is where the fun begins. You’ll get full on instructions about how to whiten your teeth but a break down of it – you brush your teeth with water first, clean your impressions, put ¼ of whitening gel into your impressions, put it on your teeth, time it, take it off, brush your teeth with toothpaste, clean your impressions, put the desensitizing gel in your impressions, time it and then don’t brush your teeth – let the the desensitizing gel stay on your teeth and that’s pretty much it!

When I first started whitening my teeth, I started at 45 minutes to test how sensitive my teeth were and to be honest, my teeth aren’t too sensitive. I thought my teeth were super sensitive but when I put the professional whitening gel and impressions on my teeth, it didn’t hurt whatsoever! So the next day, I did it for an hour, slowly to an hour and fifteen, then an hour and a half, then finally two hours.

Make sure you don’t put too much gel in your impressions because it’s not supposed to overflow in your mouth. The first two times I put the gel in my impressions, I did about 1/3 and it overflowed in my mouth and I constantly had to spit it out and that delays your process!! Make sure you only put ¼ because it goes a long way – you don’t want the gel to be overflowing in your mouth.

Most people typically whiten their teeth for two weeks. I whitened my teeth for three. They give you 3 syringes of whitening gel and three of desensitizing gel, so if your teeth are super sensitive, these will be your best friend. I used a whitening gel syringe consecutively every day for two weeks. I used 1/3 of the product for the first three days and then ¼ for the remainder of the two weeks so the syringe lasted me exactly 14 days, almost 15 days. You’ll receive three of these so in general, an entire Smile Brilliant kit will last you 6 weeks or a month and a half.

You can whiten your teeth in the morning, the afternoon or at night. It’s preferred to do it at night so that your teeth can relax for the night and the gel will fully work better. However, it’s totally up to you. After you whiten and use the desensitizing gel, make sure you don’t eat or drink for at least half an hour. If you want to whiten your teeth when you wake up in the morning, that’s totally fine. Just don’t eat or drink for at least 30 minutes. I whiten at night. When I put my impressions in, I just do my homework, watch television or work on blog posts. Sometimes, I forget that my impressions are in my mouth. The impressions are pretty much like retainers (that’s if any of you have ever had braces before) so they’re easy to put on and take off. Hopefully, yours fits perfectly. Mine fit perfectly so I had no problems whatsoever. It wasn’t too tight or too loose and it didn’t hurt to take them off or put them on.

After the two weeks of whitening my teeth, I only saw a little bit of a difference. If you are expecting a complete change of color – meaning from your shade of teeth to Gucci Mane’s teeth (look up his teeth, they’re completely WHITE), then this product is not for you! You will not see an overnight change and it will not drastically change your teeth, but it will whiten your teeth. For my teeth, it whitened my teeth just a little bit after two weeks. It wasn’t a dramatic change but you were able to see the difference.

*I apologize because I tried really hard to take the photos in the SAME lighting but I just couldn’t do it no matter how many photos and angles I took. These photos don’t do my change of shade any justice but I promise, 100%, my shade did change! I tried my absolute best to get the perfect photo and these photos are unedited by the way*

After three weeks, you were still able to see a bit of a difference, but not a dramatic change. I read a few reviews that others teeth shade changed to a few shades whiter but for me, it didn’t. It’s probably because I drink coffee and soda 3 times a day, but I could be wrong. Don’t get me wrong, my shade DID change, it just wasn’t too dramatic.

Yay!!!! Glad you’re enjoying Smile Brilliant. I did some work with them and I LOVE their system!! It’s super easy to use the trays, right? I can see the difference in your teeth! The undertones of them are much whiter which is what I love about Smile Brilliant because you know it’s really working on making your teeth overall whiter, not just the surface! 🙂
