It’s the fight we all have an interest in. Premature aging is a concern that the vast majority of women have, and boy do we take some pains to try and prevent it. Skincare regimen, specific changes to our diets, a whole range of cosmetic procedures, and a lot of it works. It can do wonders. However, there are also mistakes we can make that are not only less effective than we think, but that can actively sabotage our other attempts. Here are three of the biggest mistakes most women are making in the fight for younger skin.

Using harmful ingredients in your skincare

You would think that skincare products would include only the ingredients that can end up helping you, but that’s not strictly true. There is a range of ingredients you have to watch out for when buying skincare products. While they might sound benign, fragrances can contain all sorts of ingredients that the bottle doesn’t have to disclose, including hormone disruptors that can lead to inflammation. Sodium lauryl sulfate can cause skin irritation and unbalance the skin’s natural protective oils. Retinol can fight aging when you use pea-sized drops of specific retinol cream, but as an active ingredient in more broadly used creams, it can go on to dehydrate your skin. Learn your skin care ingredients and where they’re necessary.

Getting the wrong kind of work done

Cosmetic procedures can do the skin a world of good. Specifically targeted fillers can not only improve the look of youthfulness, they can contribute to the skin’s hydration. Microneedling can give a jumpstart to the skin’s natural healing process which can eradicate wrinkles entirely. Spa services including very specific cosmetic work can do a lot of good. However, procedures that aren’t specific, that offer a “catch-all” approach to your skin, specifically your face, can end up making your face look too tight and overworked. Make sure you’re opting for bespoke, specific treatments.

A failure to protect

Your skin needs protection, and there are lots of ways you should ensure you’re affording it. Protecting it from the sun is the most obvious, but you have to do it every day, not just in the summer. If you’re spending a lot of time outside, don’t fail to use sunscreen. After you come inside, hydrate and moisturize. But your skin has ways to protect itself that many of us undermine. A deep cleansing of the skin in the morning removes the protective layer of oils that actually help keep your skin youthful. Save your exfoliation and your cleansing for the evening. A brief wash with water is all you need in the morning.

Not everything that’s listed as healthy for your skin necessarily is. Unnecessary ingredients and unnecessary procedures can do more harm than good. Simple negligence in protecting your skin can also undermine all the efforts you’ve undergone so far, just to add the cherry on top. Take a closer look at what you do to protect your skin and make sure you’re not including any of these mistakes.
