8 Ways to Boost Your Mental Health
Our mental health is just as important as our physical well being and it needs taking care of in just the same way. Everyone knows you should eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep and exercise to stay fit, but there are other little things you can include in your life to boost your mental health.
Work To Your Strengths
Work at things you know you are good at as this will help to build your self-confidence. Once you have done that you will be ready to take on tougher tasks, which will boost your mental well being even more.
One Step At A Time
It was Martin Luther King who said ‘You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step’. This is very true about anything you want to improve in your life. You are more likely to succeed if you take just one step at a time.
Take A Walk With Nature
Research has shown that spending time with nature is really good for our mental health and wellbeing. Take a walk in the park or through the woods to improve the way you feel.
Some people who take walks such as this like to have the extra stability a walking stick can provide. The best walking sticks are made from different materials to suit the type of walking you are undertaking, but most of them are wood of some sort.
Treat Yourself To Some Dark Chocolate
Dark chocolate contains flavonoids, caffeine, and theobromine, which are all thought to work together to improve mental skills, alertness and feelings of well being. Just a couple of squares every few days will do the trick.
Share Your Feelings
It has always been known that socializing is good for your mental health, but it has been realized that sharing your feelings with other people can have huge benefits. Tell them about the struggles you have had and how you have started your road to recovery.
Get Out The Coloring Books
Remember the coloring books you had as a child? Well, now they make them for adults too. Buy yourself a coloring book and a few crayons and get them out for 20 minutes when you are feeling a bit low. Complex geometric patterns seem to be the most effective, but whatever you color will take your mind away from your anxious feelings.
Laughter Is The Best Medicine
It does not matter if you watch a funny film, check out funny videos on social media or speak with a friend that you think is funny, research has shown that nothing will lift your spirits quicker than enjoying a good laugh.
Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
Step outside your normal comfort zone to experience new adventures and excitement in your life. It was Albert Einstein that said ‘Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new’. Be prepared for things to go wrong sometimes, but enjoy it when everything goes according to plan.
Anything that lifts your mood will improve your mental health and sometimes it is a case of finding the things that help you to feel less anxious and stressed.
