Being a great photographer is not the same as taking a great photograph. Anyone can have a good day and fluke the perfect shot, but very few people can do this consistently, almost every single time they pick up a camera. This is what makes a great photographer. Photography can be a tricky and expensive hobby to pick up, but it’s incredibly rewarding if you get it right. In fact, you could even go pro and start your own business. But, before you get too carried away, here are five things you need to do to get started.

Find Your Inspiration

Before you can do anything else, you need to find what inspires you. After all, you can’t be a photographer unless you have something to photograph. Photography can mesh well with your everyday life and other hobbies, so consider the things you do throughout the day, whether it be gardening or taking care of your children, and decide whether you want to shoot any of these. You can also look at other people’s photos and figure out which ones you’re most drawn to.

Know Your Camera

You can’t pick up photography until you have a camera, so do your research and try to find one that suits you. Since this is a hobby, rather than a career, you shouldn’t worry too much about getting the latest model or best features. You just need something that has RAW and a manual mode. Once you have your camera in your hands, you need to take some time getting to know it and learning all of its features, buttons, and dials.

Just Start Shooting

There is a lot of work and learning that needs to be done to help you shoot the perfect pictures, but to get you started you just need to start shooting. This is the only way you’ll find out what you like, what you don’t like, and what works well with your particular camera. Of course, there are going to be some pretty awful shots in the beginning, but this is all part of learning. You need to take a few bad photos to know what makes a good one.

Get A Mentor

If you want to improve your photography and photographs, then you need to learn as much as you can. This means reading photography blogs, books, and magazines, researching Photoshop lessons and learning resources, and sometimes even getting yourself a mentor. Mentors are incredibly useful for newbie photographers, as they can answer any of your burning questions and give you constructive criticism on your technique and final images.

Remember Your Camera

Once you know the basics and really get into your new hobby, it’s important that you take your camera absolutely everywhere with you. You should put it in your bag when you go to work, have it on you when you walk your dog, and bring it along on every single shopping trip. You never know when inspiration is going to strike, so make sure you always remember to pick up your camera when you go out.

Photography can be an incredibly rewarding hobby, so follow the tips above if you want to try it out.
