A moisturizer is essential because it helps to fight free radicals, plumps the skin, and stops it from drying out. Why, then, is it so goddamn difficult to buy? Walking up to the checkout and paying isn’t tricky. In fact, it’s the easiest part of the entire process. Choosing one in the first place is where it gets tricky. Firstly, there are too many competitors on the market. Secondly, it’s hard to tell them apart because you don’t know what ingredients are essential and which ones are full of hot air. Well, you’re about to find out because below is a list of the ingredients that leave a mark.

Hyaluronic Acid

Not to be confused with hydrochloric acid. One is a moisturizer and the other burns off skin! There’s a simple reason why you’re searching for this element, and it’s its hydrating qualities. According to Marie Clare, this acid can hold up to 1000 times its weight in H2O. If that wasn’t impressive enough, it uses its water-based powers to hydrate the skin and ensure it looks moist, plump and fuller than before. Don’t let the name fool you because it isn’t harmful. In fact, it occurs naturally and using HA is an added booster to speed up the process.

Petrolatum Acid

Again, it sounds very hazardous, as if a small drop will start to destroy your skeleton. The truth is that it is powerful but in a completely different way. Adding moisture to the skin is a savvy move as long as the surface maintains the dampness. Otherwise, the whole process is pointless. Some people have skin which is permeable enough to let moisture escape as soon as it touches the surface. PA enforces the skin’s natural barriers and, therefore, reduces water wastage. Research Gate delves deeper into the topic if you are curious.

Heparan Sulfate

Without confusing the hell out of everyone, this is a protein that is found in all animals. However, the type you want is called heparan sulfate analog, or HSA for short. Developed by Sente, it’s fast becoming somewhat of a super ingredient due to the roles it performs. The company that produced it is a specialist in molecules, so HAS is very active in containing and improving issues such as the signs of aging. It also targets extracellular matrix formation and integrity. Jargon aside, all you have to know is that it works. Check for it in stores, but at the moment it’s usually found in Sente products only.

Lactic Acid

Oh yes, this is the acid that forms when you exercise. It’s the pesky chemical that causes cramp, which then makes you stiffen up like a cadaver. But, there is more to LA than meets the eye. As well as being harmful, it’s incredibly helpful because it allows skincare products to absorb more quickly into the skin. It also doubles up as exfoliate encourages skin development. Lactic acid in skincare = healthy. LA in exercise = painful!

The next time you shop for a moisturizer, will these ingredients be on your shopping list?
