Health Recovery: 4 Fundamentals To Keep In Mind

Recovering from a serious health condition or injury is always a long process, and one that can cause no small amount of ups and downs. However, there are a few fundamentals you can stick to that should help keep the process as smooth and straightforward as possible…

#1 – Prioritize your recovery

One of the most common issues people experience during recovery is pushing too hard, too soon. It is natural that, as soon as you begin to feel a little better, you’ll want to get back to your normal routine as soon as possible – with the same day-to-day routine, responsibilities, and so on. However, moving back to a normal routine can actually hamper your recovery efforts in the long term.  Try to see your recovery as your number one priority above almost everything else; cancel or postpone as much of your usual routine as you are able to, consider going to a rehabilitation facility so you can focus solely on your recovery, and let friends and family know that you might not be as available as you usually are.

#2 – Be cautious of mental as well as physical health

If you are recovering from a physical health malady, it’s natural to assume that much of the recovery process will focus on the physical aspect of that malady – which is, of course, very important. However, it’s also important to think about the mental side of recovery. Being unwell, or sustaining a serious injury, may impact your self-confidence or even lead to increased anxiety or depression, so it can be useful to see recovery as a two-pronged approach: one element focuses on the physical side, and the other seeks to ensure your mental and emotional well-being is maintained throughout.

#3 – Keep a diary of your progress

In the intro we mentioned that recovery tends to have ups and downs. However, even if you are aware that there may be good days and bad days, the swing can be very difficult to live with. On the “up” days, you’ll feel great, positive and confident that you’re on the right track, but the “down” days can be very challenging to deal with, and may bring forth concerns that your recovery is not actually progressing as hoped. Keeping a diary of your progress can help to make the down days a little more manageable, as you can reflect back on your starting point and how far you have come since then. You’ll also be able to see the other down days, and how those were a blip in an otherwise positive pattern of improvement – which will be very encouraging indeed.

#4 – Follow medical advice to the letter

Whether it’s taking medication or avoiding certain tasks, completely adhering to medical advice is always the right choice during a recovery period. If you do experience signs of improvement sooner than you initially expected, then contact your doctor and explain this before making a change to your overall recovery plan.

Keeping the above fundamentals in mind can help to ensure that your recovery from a health condition or injury is as efficient and effective as it can be.
