How to Look After Your Back

No matter the cause, it can take some time to figure out what’s causing the back pain and how to treat the symptoms. No two back pains are the same, so a pain that is associated with a stenosis in the spine isn’t going to be the same as a strained muscle.

It can take some time to get to the right treatment of back pain, and whether you see a chiropractor or not is irrelevant. You need to know exactly how you can treat your back pain so that you are the most comfortable you can be, and it’s not the easiest thing to do unless you go and see an expert to help you.

You deserve to feel healthy and happy, and navigating health insurance, as well as everyday stress in relation to your back pain is going to take some time. So here are some things that you can do to achieve better comfort and pain relief in your spine.

  1. Make sure that your bed is comfortable. You need your back and your spine to rest well while you are sleeping, and for that you need to ensure that your bed is comfortable, not lumpy and not lopsided. To better support your spine while you sleep, you can look at the merits of a memory foam mattress, but really you just need to ensure that all of the structures within your spine are relaxed and able to rejuvenate. A firm or a medium to firm mattress can help here, and keeping your spine naturally aligned with a pillow beneath the knees is better than trying to lay flat and feeling that archway in your back.
  2. You are exercising your core muscles. The muscles that surround your spine and your ribs are your core muscles as they also support around the sides of your body and your abs. The problem is that the core muscles that are located in the abdomen and the lower back have to be strong in order to support your spine. If you’re not a fan of exercise, this can feel like a huge chore before you’ve even begun. For most of us, we don’t use our core muscles during everyday activities, which means you need to put in the extra effort to be able to support your back for longer. This means swimming or walking or going to the gym and completing strength workout routines on a regular basis.
  3. Make sure that you are wearing the right shoes. Believe it or not, the shoes that you wear on your feet are going to impact the health of your back. If you’re not wearing the right shoes when you are exercising or just to get where you’re going, you’re going to feel it. Ensuring that the area of the shoe that fits the back of your heel is not too tight is important, but it should be snug enough to grip.If you have a good fit, you will avoid rolling your feet side to side and you will be able to walk nicely that supports your back.
  4. Go and get a massage. A great way to look after your back is to allow somebody to workout the kinks and the muscles when it needs it. This means going to get regular massages, and whether you do that with the physiotherapist or you do that at your local spa is completely up to you.
