Navigating The Roads Safely: A Guide For Travelers

We all love a good road trip. Whether you’re planning to take control of the wheel and create your own itinerary, or you’re looking into organized tours or considering ride sharing your way around a new city, it’s essential to bear safety in mind. If you enjoy traveling, here’s a guide to help you navigate your way around the roads seamlessly.

Tips for drivers

If you’re the designated driver for your trip, there is a number of steps you can take to minimize your risk of being involved in accidents on the road. The first thing to do is take a good look at the route. If you’re not familiar with the area, it’s a good idea to plan the trip, schedule stops, and work out exactly how you’re going to get from A to B. Take a map with you, just in case you lose GPRS signal, and make sure you stop on a regular basis to stretch your legs and get some fresh air. Always check your car before you leave. Have a look at the tire tread and pressure, top up your water and oil, and take first aid and puncture repair kits with you.

Once you get onto the road, be mindful of the speed restrictions, and drive to the conditions. If it’s raining, the roads are icy, or it’s foggy, slow down, stay well back from the vehicles in front, and be prepared to stop suddenly. If it’s bright sunshine, and the glare is making it difficult to see, wear sunglasses and keep your distance from the car in front. Don’t drive tired, and be patient. If you get angry, agitated or frustrated, this could increase your risk of being involved in an accident. Keep your eyes on the road, and don’t let phones, passengers or anything else distract you.

Getting around safely when you’re not driving

If you’re planning a vacation that involves traveling around, but you’re not going to be driving, consider your options carefully. If you’re in the city, and you plan to use ride share services or local taxis, make sure you use registered, licensed cars only and familiarize yourself with the accident procedure in an Uber. If you’re a passenger, and you have an accident, which was caused by your Uber driver, you have a right to claim compensation. If you’re hoping to book tours, for example, a coach trip to a volcano, a lake, or a theme park, read reviews, check safety records, and use reputable companies that employ drivers with years of experience and advanced driving qualifications.

It can be tempting to share lifts with strangers, especially if you’re traveling alone, but try and avoid doing this. It’s also wise to hire a cab or book a coach or train, rather than trying to hitch-hike your way around a city or country.

Are you planning a road trip, or are you hoping to explore pastures new by taking taxis or coach rides? If so, it’s crucial to take steps to protect yourself and other road users to ensure that your trip is memorable for the right reasons.
