Oil + Water Review:  Cleansing Balm + French Clay Mask Review

Oil + Water is a brand I was introduced to by Palm (no surprise).

For those of you who may not know Oil + Water, it is a brand created and founded by Erika Martins. Erika Martins grew up in the Bronx after emigrating from Brazil. She created Oil + Water as a way to remember her roots and to share it with others.

The brand in general is mainly a one-woman show, which I think is incredible. To build a business from the ground up is inspiring and motivational so I applaud Erika Martins for this. Erika was the one to design, formulate, manufacture, package and ship every one of their products herself. However, sometimes, her fiance Daniel helps out as well. The brand is dedicated to environmental sustainability and are all about zero waste. They do their best to eliminate packaging waste and offer proactive and responsible waste solutions like their container recycling program.

The two products that I was able to test out and try are the Cleansing Balm and the French Clay Mask.

The French Clay Mask is basically a mask meant for deeply cleansing, stimulating, and toning with a boost of organic herbs and a perfect way to detox. This product is both rich in natural minerals. It is great for drawing toxins and impurities out of the skin as well as minimizing the appearance of pores. This product helps to repair the skin and clear occasional blemishes as well as prevent future breakouts. This product also contains jojoba oil which mimics the skin’s sebum and restores moisture for a glowing complexion, and organic aloe vera which packs for an additional hydrating punch.

I’ve used this product about three times now. The product says to only use it once a week but I used it twice in a week and nothing bad happened to my skin. Basically, to use this product, you would mix 1 flat teaspoon dry powder with ½ teaspoon of water. Then, you use spread the mask on your face and leave it in for 15-20 minutes or until the mask is dry. But there are two ways to use this product. The first was as a mask and the second as an exfoliating scrub so instead of waiting for the product to dry, you just massage it into your skin and then wash it off.

I used this product in both ways. I first used it as an exfoliating scrub. I liked it but it was somewhat messy. I kept getting the product all over me but that’s because I’m just naturally a messy person. But in general, I did like massaging the product into my face. I think it does a great job at exfoliating my skin. It doesn’t irritate me nor does it hurt any of my acne scars/skin. My skin feels great after using it.

As for as a mask, I love clay masks. I love waiting for the product to dry on my face and having it get hardened on my face. I just find it so fun and amusing. I know people find it weird for masks to harden on their faces but I find it fun and I love using this mask. I waited about 30 minutes just because I genuinely like the feeling of my mask hardening on my face but in general, this mask is great for my acne-prone skin. Right now, with the weather changing, my skin is acting out so I used this mask all over my face to prevent it from breaking out anywhere on my face and it worked well with my sensitive, acne-prone skin. It didn’t irritate my scars nor did it hurt them. After I washed my face, my skin felt really smooth but it was a little dry so I did mist my face after. So if you plan on using this clay mask or a clay mask in general, remember to moisturize your skin after the clay use.

I love the tight sensation as the clay starts to dry so you may not like the product if you hate clay hardening but in general, I love it!

As for the cleansing balm, this product is a gentle, oil-based everyday cleansing and makeup remover. This product is perfect for emulsifying and transforming from a balm into a milk when mixed with water into your palm. This product can be used as a makeup remover or cleanser. It’s gentle and can also be great as a moisturizer. So the great thing about this product is that you can use it for your body too! This product contains hemp seed and neem oils. It also contains jojoba oil and has a creamy mango butter feeling. It is used to soften the skin without clogging pores.

When I first used the product, I completely forgot to wash my face and include water into the product so of course, I just dabbed the product onto my skin. I dabbed it all over my skin and was like, “How does this remove makeup” and then realized I used it as a moisturizer instead. It did make my skin feel smooth and soft, thought!

After about ten minutes, I reread the directions and realized I did it wrong and did not use the product as a cleanser or makeup remover. So I went back and wet my hands and rubbed the product together and it finally worked! The first couple times I used this, I used it as a cleanser. It is really smooth and delicate on my skin. My skin didn’t have any bad reactions nor did it reject the product.

As a makeup remover, it does a decent job at removing my makeup. It didn’t remove my makeup completely. I tend to wear waterproof eyeliner and mascara and this product did do a decent job withremoving itbut not the entirety. I still had excess eyeliner on me but I didn’t find it to be a big deal. It was soft and smooth on my skin. And worked well with my sensitive skin.

So basically, you can use this product as a moisturizer, cleanser or makeup remover and I tried it in all three aspects. I haven’t used the product on my body but it worked well with my face and I really liked in.

In general, I adore this brand and the products.
